In Jan 2003 I bought VueScan for my Epson Perfection 1200. I used it a lot, more functions than the standard driver. Got new computers with new operating systems, forgot about VueScan. I got a new Epson scanner — old one doesn’t have Win10 drivers. I remembered VueScan. Found it, downloaded the trial version, and my old EPSON 1200 scanner WORKED again. Wow, a purchase made in 2003, works on a PC with an operating system that doesn’t exist in 2003. 17 YEARS later! And that for a very small amount of money. A lot of people are afraid of change and I myself must admit that I have been afraid of upgrading to the latest Microsoft Windows 10 Software. I have a lot of devices and software that if they didn’t work on Windows 10, I knew that it was going to take a lot of time to get things to work. It takes time to ensure all of your hardware and especially software is compatible with Windows 10.
I purchased my Epson Perfection 1660 a very long time ago. I must say that after all of these years it still does a good job. It is slow when trying to scan larger photos but quality takes time.
After I upgraded to Windows 10, it was difficult to find a driver for my scanner that is compatible with Windows 10. It seems that there is always some company out there trying to get rich by putting Spyware or selling something that isn’t real.
I came across one program that utilizes drivers and makes the scanner work. The problem is that the program is about $90 for the Professional Version. I wasn’t ready to pay for something that I already owned, so I kept researching.
Epson Perfection 1660 PHOTO TWAIN Driver
I went straight to the Epson website and downloaded an older Windows 7 32-bit version of the TWAIN 5 Driver v5.71A. The driver works just like the original when I purchased it. It turns out that Windows 10 is capable enough to run the older software and still function.

Перед тем как пользоваться любым сканером, на компьютер необходимо установить как минимум драйвер, а возможно, и какие-то утилиты. В этом отношении сканеры Epson Perfection не являются исключением. В комплект поставки входят четыре CD, на которых имеется программное обеспечение, и документация на семи языках. Для установки был выбран английский (русского пока нет).
В состав программного обеспечения входят Twain-драйвер и утилита Epson Smart Panel. Twain-драйвер необходим для обеспечения интерфейса между сканером и утилитами, работающими с изображениями, например Adobe Photoshop, IrfanView, ArcSoft PhotoImpression, MS Word и многими другими. Интересно, что название для интерфейса взято из баллады о Востоке и Западе Киплинга: «Oh, East is East, and West is West, and never the twain shall meet». Этим подчеркивались имевшиеся на момент создания интерфейса трудности в подключении сканеров к системе. «Восток есть Восток, Запад есть Запад, и вместе им не сойтись».
Twain-драйвер позволяет производить предварительный просмотр оригинала, выделять зону окончательного сканирования и задавать его режим, то есть глубину цвета, разрешение и проводить оптимизацию по типу оригинала (фотография, рисунок или текст).
Утилита Epson Smart Panel позволяет автоматизировать решение ряда рутинных, часто встречающихся задач. Ее интерфейс — это окно, на котором размещены крупные кнопки. Кнопка «Scan to P.I.M.» позволяет сканировать и печатать фотографии, используя систему P.I.M. (PRINT Image Matching), которую должны поддерживать принтер и его драйвер. Опция «Scan to PDA» помогает переправить отсканированную картинку на наладонный компьютер. Поддерживаются Palm и Pocket PC. Кнопка «Photo Print» облегчает сканирование и печать. «Scan for Creativity» позволяет оформить забавные календари и открытки. Кнопка «Scan to File» облегчает процесс сканирования изображения и сохранения образа в файл. Опция «Copy» позволяет получить одну или несколько копий сканируемого документа. Кнопка «Scan to Web» позволяет получить оптимальные размер и тип файла для размещения на Web-странице. «Scan to OCR» предоставляет возможность распознавания текста. Русский язык поддерживается и распознается! Успешно распознается даже текст в три колонки. Наконец, кнопка «Scan to E-Mail» может быть использована для отсылки отсканированной фотографии по электронной почте.
