Shuffle away

Spotify’s shuffle button randomises songs. It is neither new nor unique. In the early 1980s, shuffle was available on CD players and MP3 players. It served as a staple for Spotify’s largest competitor Apple, via iTunes and long-forgotten devices such as the iPod and iPod shuffle.

Shuffle is essentially a random number generator that picks the next songs based on chance. The problem is true randomness means the same song might sometimes play repeatedly. In 2014, Spotify tweaked their algorithm to make shuffle seem more random.

Shuffle is still available on Spotify for playlists, but users must now access it via a menu when listening to albums as opposed to having the option right next to the play button. A statement from Spotify hailed their “new premium feature […] to make play the default button on all albums”. This change applies to all albums, not just Adele’s 30, and features on both mobile and desktop versions of Spotify.

Troubleshooting Device and iOS/iPadOS Crashes

iPhone and iPad use Apple’s iOS or iPadOS operating system. Despite the platform being relatively stable, problems are bound to appear occasionally. These can include random restarts, software glitches, and freezes that require manual intervention.

How to Restart Your iPhone

Many issues are resolved simply by restarting your device. If you’ve noticed weird OS behavior, like a screen that won’t “sleep” or problems with audio playback, a restart might do the trick.

The method you use to restart your device depends on your iPhone model:

  • iPhone 8, X, XS, XR, or Newer: Press and hold Volume Down and Sleep/Wake until “Slide to Power Off” appears, and then swipe the bar to turn off your device.
  • iPhone 7or earlier: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button, either on the top (iPhone 5s and earlier) or right side (iPhone 6 and 7), until “Slide to Power Off” appears, and then swipe the bar to turn off your device.

Once your device has powered off, you can restart it by holding the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.

Recover an Unresponsive iPhone

If your iPhone is completely unresponsive or appears to be frozen, you’ll need to force a reset by holding some buttons. This differs depending on which iPhone model you’re using:

  • iPhone 8, X, XS, and XR: Press and release Volume Up, press and release Volume Down, and then press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
  • iPhone 7: Press and hold Volume Up and the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
  • iPhone 6or earlier: Press and hold the Home and Sleep/Wake buttons until the Apple logo appears.

If your iPhone has a physical home button, it’s an iPhone 6. Other models have either a virtual Home button (software-controlled, without moving parts) or no Home button at all.

Reinstall iOS or iPadOS

Sometimes, problems aren’t solved by a restart, and you might need to reinstall the operating system. This is the last resort for persistent issues related to the core operating system. Problems like this can arise from the use of third-party software used to “clean” or maintain your iPhone and jailbreaking.

Keep in mind that reinstalling iOS or iPadOS will cause you to lose all of the data on your iPhone. Make sure you create an iPhone backup so you can restore your data when you’re done.

  1. Head to Settings and tap your name at the top of the list.
  2. Tap your iPhone from the list of devices at the bottom of the screen (it will say “This iPhone”).
  3. Tap “Find My iPhone.” Uncheck “Find My iPhone,” and then input your Apple ID password.
  4. Launch iTunes (Windows users can download it from Apple’s website) and connect your iPhone with a Lightning cable.
  5. Click on the device icon in the top-right corner (see screenshot below).
  6. On the Summary tab, click Restore iPhone, and then follow the prompts.

The Luna Display extends a Mac or PC’s display to a secondary Mac or ‌iPad‌. There’s an ‌iPad‌ to Mac mode, an ‌iPad‌ to PC mode, a Mac to Mac mode, and a PC to Mac mode. For the USB-C version of the Luna Display, it can be used interchangeably between Macs and PCs thanks to a software update that came out earlier this year.

For those who have a Mac mini or Mac Pro, Luna Display has a «headless» mode that allows another Mac or ‌iPad‌ to be used as the main display for one of these display-less machines.

The Luna Display apps are designed to support both PCs and Macs, and the recent update also made the software faster on Apple’s M1, M1 Pro, and M1 Max machines. Macs and PCs have the same features when used with Luna Display, such as Teleprompter mode for an ‌iPad‌ connected to a main machine. Astropad is also working on 5K display support, a feature that is coming by the end of 2021.

Apple has designed a Sidecar function for using an ‌iPad‌ as a secondary device for a Mac, but it’s much more limited than what Luna Display can do because it only works with a Mac and an ‌iPad‌. Luna Display supports Mac-to-Mac, PC-to-Mac, and PC-to-iPad connectivity in addition to Mac-to-iPad functionality.

It’s also worth noting that ‌Sidecar‌ is limited to newer devices, while Luna Display is compatible with older iPads and Macs that don’t support the ‌Sidecar‌ feature. Luna Display also offers full native resolution, which is not available with the Mac to Mac AirPlay feature that Apple added in macOS Monterey, plus it connects over Ethernet or Thunderbolt in addition to WiFi for faster speeds.
